The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoc to work with a multi-disciplinary team on wind turbine rotor design related research for floating offshore wind turbines.
The selected candidate should have experience in areas of wind turbine blade design, floating platform design, and/or optimization and parallel computing. The position involves working with a dynamic team of scientists, researchers, and wind energy analysts working to solve problems that move the wind industry forward in support of the Department of Energy mission. On any given day, you may be called on to: Perform aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulations of offshore wind turbines and may involve adding improved capabilities in existing design tools for structural and aerodynamic design and optimization of wind turbine blades.
Perform computational model and algorithmic development and implementation tasks, as well as tasks related to the design of floating offshore wind turbine systems of the future. Required: PhD in Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or an equivalent field; Coupled analysis of fixed-bottom and floating wind turbine systems; Verification and Validation of aero-hydro-servo-elastic tools for offshore wind turbines; Fatigue and extreme loads analysis experience, along with demonstrated experience with associated IEC and DNV-GL certification standards. Desired: Experience in one or more of the following areas: – Wind turbine blade design or optimization methods – Solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and/or knowledge of the fundamentals of wind turbine aerodynamics – Development of engineering codes Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify research objectives and develop clear solutions to complex problems while using sound judgment in drawing conclusions; Ability to work well in teams with diverse skills and backgrounds and be proactive and creative in solving problems that arise; Excellent time-management skills including the ability to prioritize work and set and meet reasonable deadlines.
Department Description: The Wind Energy Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of wind technologies. This department is responsible for all aspects of wind turbine blade design, wake physics, system reliability, system integration, verification and validation of performance models, and model uncertainty quantification. Department activities range from computer based design and analysis, lab testing of components, to full scale testing of wind blades at the SWiFT test site, near Lubbock, TX.

An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
